How Flossing Can Transform Your Oral Health

May 01, 2024

Many people only do half of their daily oral health routine. They brush their teeth, but they don't floss enough. According to Nexhealth, while studying the flossing patterns in adults, 16% said that they always flossed at least once a day, 20% said that they flossed only when they needed to, and 8% said that they never flossed. Flossing is important, and here's how it can transform your oral health.

It Can Reduce the Risk of Cavities

When you brush your teeth, even with an electric toothbrush, it's not going to get all the bits of food that can be between your teeth. Flossing will get rid of those food particles and keep them from breaking down into bacteria and attacking your teeth. It can also improve the smell of your breath.

It Can Prevent Gum Disease

Plaque can build up on your teeth if you don't brush and floss enough. This can result in gum disease. The earlier form is known as gingivitis, where you can have red and puffy gums with some bleeding. Fortunately, gingivitis is reversible if you brush and floss correctly. You can ask your family dentist for some pointers about the best techniques and practices. If you don't reverse it, the plaque can harden into tartar and get beneath your gums. This can only be removed by a dentist. Your gingivitis can become periodontitis, which is not reversible.

It Can Be a Quick Habit

There are a lot of different types of dental floss - waxed and unwaxed, among others. You shouldn't rack your brain too hard to find one. Just determine what works for you. If it's been a while, there might be some bleeding and irritation. That should go away shortly if you continue to do this great habit.

Flossing takes around a minute or so. Don't be too rough, and don't do it in a jagged motion. You can try out dental flossers. These make it easier to reach some areas in the back of your mouth. Overall, you can floss once a day and brush twice a day to get the most out of your dental routine. You're looking at a five-minute time investment. That's a small amount of time for such great results.
